PROF. KOFI ODURO-AFRIYIE

Profile:
Born at Apinkra, near Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Prof. Kofi Oduro-Afriyie was educated at Sekondi College, Sekondi. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Physics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, a M.Sc. (Physics) degree from the University of Cape Coast and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Calabar, Nigeria.


He also holds a Certificate in Advanced Leadership Skills from Haggai Institute, Maui, Hawaii, USA and a Certificate in Biblical Theology from the Berea International Institute in Seoul, South Korea.

Prior to his assumption of duty on 1st February, 2008 as Vice President (Academic) of Central University College, Professor Oduro-Afriyie served as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, University of Ghana, Legon from 2003 to 2006 and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Ghana from 2006 to January 31st 2008.

Before joining the University of Ghana in 1991, the Professor served as a Research Associate in Agroclimatology at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria from 1979 to 1981. He also lectured at the University of Calabar in Nigeria from 1981 to 1988. He joined the University of Liberia as Assistant Professor of Physics in 1988. He and his family were taken captive by Charles Taylor’s men during the Liberian civil war. For four months they went through hell, but the Lord delivered them out of the jaws of death. What he and his family went through in the war have been captured in a book: Delivered Through Rain published by Asempa Publishers.
                                                                  
Professor Oduro-Afriyie is a Fellow of the Ghana Institute of Physics and a member of the Society of African Physicists & Mathematicians. He has published widely in international scientific journals. He was listed in Marquis Who’s Who In The World in 1998 and 1999 and Who’s Who In Science And Engineering in 2000 for outstanding achievements in Physics. He also recently received the 2007 Eminent African Scientist of the Year Award.

From January 2001 to December 2006 he was a Senior Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. He was the recipient of the 2001 Best Lecturer Award of the University of Ghana Medical Students Association. He has, for the past thirteen years, served as the Physics Consultant to the GTV programme National Science and Maths Quiz. He is an External Examiner in Physics for the University of Cape Coast and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi,

Born again in April 1976, Professor Oduro-Afriyie is the current Associate Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church at Legon and Patron of the University Christian Fellowship.
