DEPARTMENT OF OLD TESTAMENT AND SEMITIC LANGUAGES

The Graduate programmes offered in this department are:

M.Phil (Old Testament & Semitic Languages)

A two year course designed particularly for those who have graduated in Theology and wish to do advanced work in Old Testament Studies. It is a valuable preparation for to do doctoral level studies in this area. Applicants who want to study in this department must note that high level of competence will be expected in Biblical Hebrew.

A knowledge in New Testament Greek is also essential. Teaching takes the form of both individual supervision and attendance at lectures. The degree is awarded on an examination and thesis. M.Phil. candidates will be required to offer at least eight courses and in addition present a thesis of not more than 50,000 words. The research papers may form the basis of the student’s dissertation.

M.A. (Old Testament & Semitic Languages)
The course provides an opportunity for advancement in Old Testament studies within the limits of what can be done in twelve months. M.A. in old Testament candidates will be required to offer eight papers and in addition present a thesis of 20,000 words.

This MA is related to the M.Phil in Old Testament (see above) and covers part of the ground covered by M.Phil. Students who were initially registered for the MA programme may, with the approval of the Board of Graduate Srudies, subsequently transfer to the M.Phil.
