DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

The Department of Environment and Development Studies introduces an evolving area of academic discipline which involves a combination of such subjects as geography, economics, law and management studies among others. As an interdisciplinary area of study, therefore, the course is based on the wide definition of the “environment” as the totality of the physical and human surroundings, the different methods and levels of human interaction with the physical elements and the respective outcomes.
It also deals with the various management practices that have been designed to address the results of the environment- development interactions.
So far, environmental science as a comprehensive subject is taught in only a few tertiary institutions in Ghana. The establishment of the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies at the Central University College is deemed highly beneficial to introduce a comprehensive,multi-disciplinary course in Environment and Development Studies. The Department offers courses which are relevant to the other existing courses such as Economics, Management and Accounting,Theology and French. The Department also provides a unique opportunity to broaden the horizon of students and prepare them for useful roles in national development.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

Vision: “Integrate the environment into the development process in Ghana”
Goal: To train and equip middle level professionals with the requisite knowledge and skills required in addressing environmental challenges in development practice.
Objectives:To provide students with a unique opportunity to study diverse, yet distinctive environment -related subjects in a friendly and supportive academic setting. To accomplish these objectives, the courses will teach both theory and practice with the aim of producing graduates with skills relevant to the courses and equip them to be able to understand, measure and monitor the earth’s environmental systems with emphasis on the Ghanaian situation and discover how human interactions have changed these systems over time through the process development.
